A Country Rose had the honor of wedding florist for this wonderful couple. Beautiful San Luis Mission in Tallahassee Florida was the setting for the late February wedding. The flowers for the bridal and her party bouquets were calla lilies, ivory & coral roses, and hydrangea.
Mal was a beautiful bride she had five bridesmaid all dressed in a stunning coral color. The flower girls were adorable with sweetheart halos on their head.
Mal and Eric were wed in front of the fountain in the courtyard. The yard was shaded with a slight breeze made it very comfortable for their guest.
The reception followed in the ball room.

How Long Should My Roses Last? Tallahassee Florist

How long should my roses last?

Depending on the season commercially grown roses should last 5-10 days

When you receive your roses you want to add fresh water. Keep them away from direct light and heat.  Bacteria growing in the water will shorten the life of your roses so adding just a few drops of bleach to the fresh water can keep bacteria from growing.

When buying roses wrapped be sure you are provided with flower food this balances the ph and helps with bacteria growth.  Cut stems at a slight slant and place in room temp water in a clean vase as soon as you get home. Change out the water every other day.

Bent head is when your roses droop at the top of the stem by the head. This is caused by the water supply not going up the stem. If there is a problem with this it will usually happen in the first 24 hours you receive your roses.  Most florists guarantee their flowers and would want to know of this situation right away. Don’t hesitate to call and let them know.

Make your own flower food: 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon liquid bleach, and 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice mixed in 1 gallon of lukewarm water.

Why didn’t my roses open?

There are several reasons why roses do not open. They may have been cut too early at the farm. They were not properly hydrated or they were out of water too long.  Some cultivars are for longevity and while they have a long nice vase life they never open.

I just got my roses and they are wilted. What can I do to revive them?

Using a knife re-cut the stems of the rose an angle. Submerge the entire rose including the stem and leaves in warm water in bathtub. The rose usually revives again within an hour and can be replaced in the arrangement. Sometimes air gets trapped inside the stem and keeps the rose from drinking. Submersing roses underwater helps to push out any air bubbles that may be trapped.

Where are commercially grown roses grown?

Most commercially grown roses in the US are grown in Columbia and Ecuador & California in the higher elevations. They are grown in green houses. The higher the elevation the longer stem they produce.

Why do roses get black or dark edges on petals?

Black edges can happen for two reasons light and temperature

Light:

Roses are grown in areas with lots of intense light energy. Production areas close to the equator get 12 hours light everyday of the year.
Pigments in red roses are particularly sensitive to “sun-burning”.  This condition is genetic to red, brown and purple rose varieties

The strong equatorial light is also what provides us intense rose colors.

Temperature:

Most greenhouses in Latin America are not heated.  When there is a big difference between daytime and night time temperatures, roses reaction to these fluctuation in such a way that the pigments concentrate.  In yellow and pink roses, concentrated pigments appear as red flames or intense color chips, but in red varieties, pigments appear black. These pigmentation's do not affect the longevity of the rose.
The good thing about the large fluctuation in temperatures is that it gives us a nice large rose head.

Wild Flowers & Spring Time Tallahassee Florist A Country Rose

Spring is in the air. This is the best time of the year. The air is crisp and fragrant and it reminds me of why I love flowers. The azaleas and dogwood are blooming now and everything is turning that crisp new shade of green as all the brown from winter fades away. I am always inspired by nature and its inherent beauty is so wonderfully display in a heavenly formation. I am constantly surrounded by flowers on daily base, and yet when I see all the colors of spring, like the wild flowers and grasses, it takes me back to childhood and I want to stop and pick a me bouquet. Which I do on occasion.

Beautiful dogwoods against a clear blue sky.... Thank you Inga Finch

As I was writing this blog I decided to go out into my yard to see what I could find for a fresh picked wild flower bouquet. As I cut I just clutch them in my hand like a hand tied bouquet. Then I cut the stems even and dropped them into old tin can.
I could call this my A Country Rose weed bouquet. :)
The small green filler is pepper grass. The red spike flower is Coral Bean. The purple is Lyre-leaved Sage. Also in the bouquet are the new growths of a young pine tree and a few other identified beauties.

See what else I found.
This is a blue common violet. I always called it a wild violet.

Why a Local Florist? Tallahassee Florist A Country Rose

When sending flowers, why choose your local florist?

Today's society has us rushing through about every precious moment in our life. There are so many choices, so many ads thrown at us on a daily bases. So much information. Our mind can not contain and hold it all. So it selects only that which is valuable, or only what we are searching for at the moment.

It is so easy to go to the web and make our shopping decisions either by price, convenience or the speed in which we can obtain the thing we are looking for.

I am amazed at all the companies that are competing in our industry. The floral industry.

At the bottom of the page you will see a Google search page for the term "florist". I did not put in Tallahassee but it knows I am local so it pulled it the local along with the map. When doing a search you have ads at the top bottom and along the side and at the bottom. These are paid advertising. Every time you click one of these ads it cost the company $$$. As you can see the first florist are, Teleflora.com, fromyouflowers.com and 1800flowers.com.  Each one of these depends on a local florist to hand deliver their flowers. There are fees to you  for this service.

Now below  these ads are the organic search, this means that no one has paid for these to be here. So lets see when the "real local shop" shows up. It starts with ftd.com, florist.com and then proflowers, and all of these, have to use the local shop as well for same day delivery.

The next one on the list is Artistic flowers. Yeah a local Tallahassee florist. The next six listings are all local. We are 2nd acountryrose.com. Of the list of 24 "florist" there are only seven that are local. Our facebook page makes it seven.

So, why use a local flower shop? Local shops are small business people who are just like you. Who care about and are active in your community. They have families who live in your town, children who go to your schools and shop at your malls. They really want to please their customers. They are real florist who care about real people!! They are your local florist. Shopping local always put money back into your community and you receive better service and product.

A Country Rose Florist is a family owned and operated 3 generation florist. We are committed to fast prompt serve and excellent product. We guarantee our flowers for seven days!! We hope you will get to know us and say "we are your local florist".
